CGC Graded Comics October 2026: NYCC Keys & Hot Books
October is peak season for CGC graded comics, and the 2026 market is delivering. Between New York Comic Con dropping exclusive CGC variant covers, a wave of MCU and Peacock adaptations driving first-appearance speculation, and DC's Absolute Universe creating entirely new key issues, collectors have more grading-worthy targets right now than at any point in the last two years. Here is what serious collectors need to be tracking this month.
NYCC 2026: CGC's Dungeon Crawler Carl Variant Is the Free Slab Everyone Wants
CGC is once again the official grading and authentication service at New York Comic Con (Oct. 8–11, Booth #2805). This year they are offering something genuinely compelling: a free limited-edition Dungeon Crawler Carl #0 variant cover featuring newly commissioned artwork by Doug Mahnke (The Mask, Aliens), with colors by David Baron. Available one-per-person to collectors who submit eligible comics for grading at the booth — while supplies last.
The timing could not be sharper. Dungeon Crawler Carl has a Peacock straight-to-series live-action adaptation in production, with Seth MacFarlane attached and casting actively underway (Jeff Hays confirmed as Princess Donut as of July 2026). The Free Comic Book Day #0 issue has already traded at $15 raw NM on the secondary market. A CGC-slabbed Doug Mahnke exclusive variant, given away free at NYCC, is the kind of zero-cost high-upside play that sharp collectors eat up. CGC is also launching a custom Dungeon Crawler Carl label for submissions starting September 22. Track your submissions on the Mystery Collective Radar to monitor grade returns and market movement in real time.
Alongside the DCC variant, CGC is offering collectors a choice of two new Absolute Batman #24 exclusive variants at the booth, written by Scott Snyder with art by Nick Dragotta. With Absolute Batman #20 still trading at $75–$80 raw NM, any NYCC-exclusive Absolute Batman variant is immediately collectible. Browse comparable CGC and PSA slabs in the Mystery Collective's collection to benchmark your own purchases.
Batman: Shadow of the Bat #1 — The Batman Part 2 Speculation Play
Victor Zsasz is having a moment. A credible leak has placed Zsasz as the primary villain in Matt Reeves' The Batman Part 2, with Sebastian Stan reportedly in talks for the role. While nothing is officially confirmed, DC appears to be laying groundwork: Zsasz is featured on the cover of the new Batman: Bad Seeds series debuting in October 2026, and the same leak also mentions Harvey Dent as a secondary villain.
That speculation has poured directly into the aftermarket for Batman: Shadow of the Bat #1 (DC, May 1992) — Zsasz's first full appearance. The book was tracking at a CGC 9.6 sale of $49 and a raw NM FMV of just $3 as of late June 2026, making it one of the best-value speculation plays in the current market. A CGC 9.8 copy, achievable from high-grade collection copies and sealed packs, could realistically land in the $150–$350 range if the Zsasz casting is confirmed. The risk/reward is compelling: raw copies are still cheap, grading costs are manageable, and the upside on a confirmed first appearance tied to a major Batman film is substantial. Condition is everything — look for unread newsstand copies or direct editions with tight staples and white pages.
The Harvey Dent angle also puts Batman: The Long Halloween #1 (1996) back on the radar. That book's CGC 9.8 trades in the $800–$1,200 range — expensive, but defensible if Two-Face appears in the film. For budget-conscious collectors, raw reading copies of Long Halloween #1 still trade under $50 and represent legitimate spec if the casting leaks prove accurate.
